I’ve noticed a number of times where a seemingly random list of television station names suddenly all pop up in Google Hot Trends at once. It took me a while to figure out why. Today I had my revelation courtesy of this map:

The TV stations in Google Hot Trends right now cover the area you see inside the red box. The red box is bad…it represents areas where there are tornado warnings. A tornado warning means that either tornadoes have been spotted or have been suspected to have touched down. In other words, get in your basement. So, it’s not surprising that people turn to the local news to watch the Doppler images of the weather getting closer and closer to their house in strange, Technicolor detail.

WPTZ, WNYT, WTEN, Capital News 9 and WRGB I’m sure all have their own version of Doppler radar, which they would say is somehow better than their competitors’. The typical way to do this is to name your system something with a really high number like Doppler 9000. Doppler 9 is for losers. Doppler 9000…winners.

It’s like the number of blades battle in razors…the higher the number the better. I’m developing an improved Doppler name that I’ll make available to the highest bidder…check this out and tell me that this system wouldn’t beat up your system and take its lunch money:

Yep…top that. Sure, you can say you have Doppler 10000 when I come out with Doppler 9000, but how do you outdo this one? You can’t. Our system rules. Deal with it.

  1. Funny post. I’ll take that logo for $1.

  2. To be fair, I’ll have to go through all the thousands of other offers before accepting this one, but this has to be considered the front runner. I’ll double-check that there isn’t one that can pay for my daughter’s college education before accepting Bob’s more than generous offer.
